This is the second chapter of a series of tutorials on how to turn a person into a Na'vi.
I'm glad for comments and critiques. This can be anything: grammar, how to improve the comprehensibility of this tutorial etc. The file is a bit big. I'm sorry for that.
Also: feel free to send me links to artwork done with the help of this tutorial! I'd be happy to see them.
Reposting of critique from January. Changes have been made to the tuts so some of the things I address are irrelevant. Rating reflects new version.
I just saw your comments on the old critique - for some reason I didn't receive any notification about them. Hence no reply before now.
Excellent work.
-------------- My boyfriend told me we'd be seeing Avatar-inspired makeup vids and manip tuts before long and seems he was right, heh. Only last week I was looking at this tutorial: [link] - it's very different from yours, so I can't really compare though. He explains things more detailed technically than yours, while you explain things in a way that makes it alot easier to adjust the techniques to our own photos - for example, by addressing the main differences between a human and Na'vi face in the intro.
I'd say your tut is more a guide than a tutorial since you don't go step-by-step, but cover several in a single paragraph, and some sentences is a bit un-precise (example: "... created some new layers and set them to hard light." instead of "created some new layers, set the Blend Mode to Hard Light - *provides shot of layer palette"
So I think it might present some troubles for newbies - but by all means, people familiar with Photoshop would have no trouble And there's no rule saying tutorials should be step-by-step; just pointing it out and you do mention that it requires some skill at the start of the tut.
The outcome looks good and it's also great that you've worked on the layout too instead of just slapping the images on a plain black/white background. Makes it pleasing to look at and caught my attention straightaway.
I only have a few suggestions that I think might improve the tutorial. First, it's too broad. If I download it (and I did, because text/images were a bit on the small side in the preview), I have to scroll sideways and that's never a good thing (I work on a normal-sized screen). I think it would be more user-friendly if you cut down the width maybe 400px or so. And at the same time increased the font size and - most important - the image size! At the part where you explain about the nose, I caught myself squinting at the image wishing for a close-up. Also, the last step's images and font is larger than in the rest of the tut.
Second, I found it a bit confusing that you called the first part "Introduction" and not "First Part" or "Pre-work" or something like that... but maybe it's just me - I associate "intro" with a part you can skip Third - and last - I think your use of bold text is a bit too frequent and inconsequent. You use it to emphasize the tools you're mentioning (but not always), sentences and words.
Small things, though. Overall, I think they're really great. I can see that you've obviously spent alot of time on these and all credit to you for sharing.
I want to start off by saying that I really love this series. While I am not personally interested in making Avatar fanart, the techniques you use are sound advice for any artwork. I really liked the fact that you chose to do the eyes the "hard" way. You seem to really care about doing things correctly and that is very important. My only complaint would be that the type is a touch on the small side, but I think that that can be remedied by downloading it, correct? Once again, you have done a fabulous job and i look forward to seeing the rest of the series!
I did a google image search on "avatar" or "avatar movie" and then set the search options on the left to large images. That gave me some pretty good images. Also, if you have the DVD you can make snapshots with VLC media player.
-- I woke up and had this strange organic object in my hand. I've never seen anything quite like this before. It opened its eye and looked and me and said: 'How about an orange?'
Now, I'm far, far behind the schedule in my attempt of avatarising myself (because I only reached 'The Eyes' stage of Your awesome tutorial), but still... As a complete newbie and layman in the world of art in general and Photoshop in particular, I must say that: I (almost) MASTERED THE EYES! XD
Thanks very much for doing this tutorial; it might not result in me becoming a skilled artist, but at least it allowed me the small joy of mastering one small skill^^ Thank You!

I cannot draw, but Photoshop is cool XNALara is also cool
Ok, you make me really, really curious now. You absolutely have to show me the result when you're done!

Hah, no way, I'd be terrified that someone might got a heart attack... Anyway, it's not going to happen in the nearest future, so... Don't bother waiting ^.^

Too bad. If you still decide to show me the half finished product one day I'll be here. I have a strong heart and I don't bite either.

Ugh, I now have the feeling I exaggerated with eyes: after getting motivated I finished my Na'vi (to the point where Your tutorial ends, that is...). Now I think only irises are well-made... Hum... I feel quite ashamed of the picture, but I shall post it - for the sake of training! It's here: [link] Can I make sweet, kitty eyes and ask for Your advice? *makes sweet, kitty eyes*
