Mermaid Kiss by sythiar Mermaid Kiss by sythiar
This came out rather well. I really like the lighting.

There is a whole lot of story behind this picture. Actually as with many of my pictures, the story always comes before the illustration.
I won't go into any details here though (and I doubt I will ever write it down). In this particular scene, however, the heroine is poisoned and a mermaid kisses her to cleanse the body of the poison. The reason why the mermaid is covered with corals and all kinds of sea life, is because she's royalty. The corals are a symbol of her class in this particular culture. Other merfolk cultures see these adornments as a rather foppish manner of self-decoration. And then there are also those who use tattoos or self-mutilation as a way of fulfilment. Needless to say that they are considered barbarians.

Time: 20-25 hours
Listening: "The picture of Dorian Gray" audio book
Special: I managed to get the rock done with very little reference

Detail shots and a WIP are coming soon.

What an exotic mermaid!! She certainly looks at home at sea with that anatomy. Her hands would look awesome with webbing between her fingers, too.

Well, I think that a real mermaid's kiss would be right like this. Well done! ;)

I guess it would. It's not that different from a normal kiss, if you think about it.

This is strangely.... romantic in a way! You don't even need to give a story, just looking at this piece brings to mind a whole story! That is something truly masterful!

You know, this is how I feel about this painting as well. To me it is kind of romantic - you are the first to read it the way I actually feel about it as well. Thank you.

Thank you for the kind comment. A lot of people keep saying it's unique. As for me, the idea had been in my head for so long it doesn't seem like that to me... but I guess it is different from other mermaids. :)

I finally watched the movie, and I see where you're coming from. I really liked it as well. At last a movie that depicts mermaids as the non-human creatures they are. Creatures we can't really understand (until it's too late, at least :)), but that are as sapient as we are.

Yeah, the dude doesn't seem to be enjoying it.. Oh well, it's still a mermaid song; so the "kissing" and the mermaid reminded the narrow-minded me of it.. :XD: Speaking of narrow-minded, I guess the sand's fine.. Once again, my failing vision has failed me.. haha This piece is awesome! :D

No, I think you had a valid point with the sand. It may look different to different people.
Thanks again. :)

After looking at it for a while, the song "Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid popped into my head.. This like is one of those artworks where your eyes start to wander around, like they move from detail to detail.. I wonder how artists like you do that, I'd want to learn.. There seems to be only one thing bothering me though.. And don't understand why, but the sand seems kinda dry.. Please correct me if I'm wrong..

Beautiful piece, btw the mermaid too is beautiful (I am attracted to marine life especially coral).. :aww:

Hey, you've been asking about how to draw detailed at some point. I did a tutorial way, way back on how to draw something with gradually more detail. I hope this helps [link]
The reason why I link this to you only now is because I as well as dA have misplaced the file and I only recovered it again a little while back.

Hahaha... we'll I wouldn't have thought of that song. Especially, since this scene is anything but romantic.
Hmm... and I don't know how to teach you that. I'm just putting every kind of detail in a drawing that I can. Mostly I start with a very detailed sketch and then just take it from there. Recently, though, I did not.
I don't know about the sand. It looks ok to me. :)

*laughs* You're the first to say that, you know. Most people think her either scary or ugly. I guess apart from me, you're one of the few people who like her looks.
Maybe I should write down the story after all. Who knows.

They would probably all look more or less the same to us. Except for the garments. Maybe I should draw a male at some point and see how this comes out - but I probably won't though. I've already moved on again.

I know this comment is really old, so in case you don't remember - we were talking about whether I should post some sketches to the above deviation. I never got around to post them here, but if you're still interested I have them on my page: [link]
If you go to the gallery and then click on the thumbnail, they are below the full view of the picture. I don't have a direct link to them yet, but I will fix that as some point.
