Freshly Hatched by sythiar Freshly Hatched by sythiar
So, there we are. I finally finished colouring this little dragon here. I'm more or less pleased with how it came out, even though, as usual, there are still some things I wish I could have done better.

References and things
I did look at some photos of lizards, trees and leaves in order to paint this, but otherwise didn't use any reference whatsoever. I mainly worked with a 5px Photoshop brush and only used a custom brush for some of the texture on the wings.

Time used
I honestly don't know. But it was a lot - or far too much, anyway.

Inspriation:
- Keith Parkinson - he used to paint absolutely wonderful dragons!
- Raúl Martín - he is a palaeontological illustrator and a brilliant one at that
- Steve Goad's "Prayer Time" - the details on his dragon paintings are stunning!

Thanks for watching. And thanks so much for the DD!

Freshly Hatched by *sythiar is just that; a freshly hatched dragon! It is drawn at a full frontal angle, so we see the twisting and turning of the creature's body as well as giving it lots of depth. ( Suggested by Gwendolyn12 and Featured by Katmomma )

You know, I never really gave that any thought... I have no idea about it's gender. Neutral, perhaps? And no, it doesn't have a name, either.

awwwww man! maybe you could hold a mini name contest to come up with a name. ex: solstice or phyrelite (fire-light)

Hmm... I don't know. Somehow I don't think it needs a name. Not all things need names. But thanks for the nice input. :)

Geez. Falling in love with the lighting and texture. I can see why this is your favorite. Plus, this has to be your work with the best use of perspective.

Thanks so much. Use of perspective is not my strong point. I'm trying to push myself there and in use of colour. I'm still glad you appreciate the artwork. :)

This is really cool looking at well done. I do want to see the dragon in a more spread out pose however so I can see more of his physical details, maybe in flight.

That would be a great idea. I'll keep that in mind for a later image. Maybe something will come off it. In this picture, however, the dragon can't fly yet, as it's just hatched and it's wing muscles still need to develop. It will still have to grow a little for that. :)

Thank you. Interestingly enough it wasn't really my intention to convey the feeling of calmness. But I'm happy that this makes you like the picture. :)

Oui, une DD est un peu stressante. Tu reçois 300 messages et plus et il n'y a presque pas de choses raisonnables ou constructives - mais je leur réponds quand même... je suis idiote comme ça. :D

I can see why this is your favorite piece - if I'd managed to draw something like this, with so much attention to all the details, I'd be patting myself on the back for a month

I love Keith Parkinson's work :( I didn't know he was dead before I read "...he used to paint..." and went to his homepage. Bah. So that's why the latest Sword of Truth novels looked like the illustrator never read the books...

Aww... thanks. You're sweet.

Yes, Keith Parkinson is dead. It's a sad thing, since he is one of the best traditional fantasy artists of this time and era. In my opinion no one could paint dragons like he could.

This is really awesome Eva, that must have taken some time to put in all those details. I really like the process you included as well, I need to sketch ideas out like that more often. Gratz on the DD!

Steve, your comment really means a lot to me. Especially since you're such an interesting and amazing artist. You have a level of skill that I currently can only dream of. Your painting "Prayer Time" was one of the main inspirations for this picture. That's why I thought of you again when "Freshly Hatched" was picked as a DD.

So it seems that we are both getting inspired from one another - because when I look at your gallery it's just itching in my fingers to start painting with oil or acrylics again. We'll see...

Thank you so much for your comment. I'm happy you took the time to look at this picture.
